My first experience with the Fallout series was with Fallout 3. While I'm not normally a fan of Post-apocalyptic games, Fallout really caught my fancy. The story is pretty cool and it kept me busy for a few days, which is saying a lot for me.
Pros: Large open ended game play, decent story and characters, wide range of weapons to use.
Cons: Besides a lack of diversity in landscapes (which makes perfect sense for this game), I don't have much to complain about.
